2007 Lenten Season at OKC First Church LENTEN RESPONSIVE READINGS
During the Lenten season we remember that, in Jesus, God suffers with and for us. With all of the visual elements in the sanctuary, including the symbols we place on the cross weekly, we seek to experience and participate in the depth of God's love for us. We acknowledge and own the ways that we ourselves, so unlike Jesus, are prone to violence and the misuse of power.
This Lenten season we began with the sign at the top of the cross, then the whip. We follow with the bag of coins, the nails, the crown of thorns, and finally, on Palm Sunday, palm branches.
The symbols will hang on the cross through Good Friday, as the light of Christ is extinguished at the conclusion of our Tenebrae service. We will await Easter morning, when these symbols of violence are changed for signs of the resurrection.
