Word and Table Service Sundays. 8:15am. Parlor (Room 14)
OKC First takes worship seriously. We are always thinking about how we can improve our offering of worship to God as well as thinking about how worship forms believers and reaches out to others with God’s message of Good News through Jesus Christ. “Word and Table: Liturgical Worship in the Wesleyan Tradition” is another way that OKC First is working toward those ends. Word and Table has us digging deep into our roots as Christians. It seeks to recover the ancient pattern of “call and response” in worship, i.e., the idea that in worship God speaks (the Service of Word), and we respond (the Service of Table, i.e., Holy Communion). In recovering this pattern we draw upon ecumenical worship resources and the unique resources present in our Anglican/Wesleyan/Holiness tradition. So what does worship “look like” in Word and Table on a typical Sunday morning? As the name implies, we celebrate Word and Sacrament (Holy Communion) every Sunday. And given that worship is our collective “work” as believers, we follow a highly participatory order of worship with the following basic shape: Entrance and Greeting, Proclamation and Response, Thanksgiving and Communion, Blessing and Sending Forth. We also follow the Christian calendar and use vestments (liturgical wear reflecting various aspects of our Christian walk). Even though this lends itself to a certain “formality,” the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and we often remain after worship for fellowship and to participate in the church’s many other ministries. We hope you will join us as we learn together to glorify God through this ancient pattern of worship that seeks to glorify God and equip us as disciples.
